Ok, so let's start with my first real tutorial.
With the pleasurable company of Moshi England, let's talk about a method that will help you to be more creative and to draw more and better. It's two in one really; you're both practising and getting ideas into paper. I hope you'll enjoy the tutorial and come back for more, because yes...there will be more.
The first thing you have to do is buy a sketchbook, if you already own one than excellent.
Sketchbooks allow us to draw sudden ideas and fast moments into paper without having to wait untill we get home, wich most of time results in forgetting most of them. Believe me, I've suffered with that.
One day you might see this really cool building you feel like using later for a background, a beautiful jacket that fits you character's personality perfectly, an awesome pose on an add.
Or, the most convenient case of all, you just might have this really amazing idea that you really have to put on paper. A Sketchbook allows you to do that, of course, with the jolly company of something that allows you to draw, it can be all type of medias, just make it practical for moments when you're standing in lines or in coffee shops. Sometimes, when you go out to draw on your sketchbook, which I occasionally do, you can take those practical portable watercolors sets and color your drawings on the spot.
A Sketchbook is a pretty amazing tool, and has helped me a lot.
Do invest in one, and they can be as cheap as 3 euros, which was what mine cost.
Draw every day, every single passing day.
You're probably thinking "What?!" but believe me, if your desire to improve is strong, you'll find the advantages most pleasurable. You will improve faster than you might think, it's in drawing that you improve, it's in learning new techniques and even invent new ones. If you draw every day, every single silly or awesome idea that comes to your head will be registered and you will be improving. See it as a game, like Sims, every single time you draw, more skill points are added to your bar, the difference is, the bar is infinite.
Please do notice that life is not a game, it's very serious and mad fun business, but the simple act of drawing every day can be overwhelmingly awesome.
You need to keep the ball rolling, and do not try to achieve absolute perfection, I believe such thing doesn't exist, because what is perfect to some can be hideous to others. See perfection as your love for drawing, that thing that we call accomplishment.
Draw every single idea that comes to your mind, you might think of it as silly, but you might find that concept useful for a drawing that you will be doing later on. That is the key to being creative, having lots of ideas doesn't make the cut all by itself, you need to remember them, combine them, study them, drawing, and love them. Other artists might disagree, I also think that creativity is, or can be, pretty abstract, sometimes a random sketch or a drawing you never gave much thought can be beautiful art, and, pure creativity.
There are some who say that artists come in two main shapes, the talented and the hard-working ones. I haven't given much relevance to that opinion yet since I haven't formed one so far. But, I do think that they overlap, some people might only find what they're talented for later on, while other, even tough very talented, can't draw that well. That means...practice!
The magic word is PRACTICE!
You need it, either you want it or not.
You need it, either you want it or not.
Find yourself.
Study other works by artists you love an admire.
Draw some fan art on your own style, it can be a pretty challenging thing to do.
Draw originals, lots and lots of originals, fan art can be fun, but your art is YOURS, and that means a lot. Believe me, you'll find yourself loving you own characters more than you ever thought, I do.
Draw in several style, if you draw manga, try some realistic, if you draw realistic try some manga or cartoon, surreal, just TRY.
Experimenting different styles is very important and it's a key example for portfolios. Keep different drawing styles in them, and originals in 90% of it, if not more. Fan art in fun, but schools do give a lot of credit to things that are created 100% by yourself (I say this but I do have an unconditional passion for fan art).
Try different medias, pencil, pen, watercolours, gouache, pastels, colouring pencils, and whatever you might think of, even coffee.
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
These are opinions by my teachers, myself, friends, favourite artists of mine, all put together.
Remember, draw every day, every single relevant thing that comes to your mind. Try different styles and medias, inspire yourself in other artists, use references, which are of most importance.
But never, never forget to be yourself.
