Magicae
Chapter 1:
Chapter 1:
Cael never expected that shopping on a magical town could be so confusing. All types of species crossed his path and he was sure he had never seen many of them.
Magus town was like a maze, small streets and shops that looked the same wherever you go, whoever the shop Cael was looking for was quite distinct. It had purple curtains and a moon on the blue door that also contained a small frame with a common phrase.
“Night comes when the day sets”
The shop was quite small and specialized in potions, Cael’s brother had told him that since Lao was always cooking up new recipes, it wasn’t unusual to hear explosions from the street or see funny coloured smoke coming out of the chimney.
Cael had been excited to come, but he also understood why all those years his brother had told him the city was a mess, enchanted and beautiful, but a complete mess.
There was almost no room to walk and even though that was probably because today was everyone’s day off, it was also due to Magus fame for being the best place to buy magical items. Everyone had to come to Magus at least once in their life, and no one who had a shop there was poor, there was so much income they could own several stores and still have a lot of money, and many did, but Lao was only one person and he could only have one store that he would occasionally close in order to cook up more potions.
Cael kept walking, trying to understand his brother’s illegible handwriting and sketchy lines that were probably streets he was supposed to go to, but he was lost, completely and utterly lost in a town where he knew no one and understood nothing. There were more tourists there than his own! And he was small, so small he could only see people, so he decided to wait, sit somewhere and hope that the crowd would dissipate for a moment, but there wasn’t even a place for him to rest.
“Bloody town! I really can’t see why I’ve always wanted to come here, it’s awful! Terrible! Messy and confusing!” - Cael would be burning if that was physically possible, but it wasn’t; only Fogo’s could do it.
At least the ugly frown he was wearing was successful in making people run away from him, they probably thought he was up to no good, or most likely about to blow someone up, but he wouldn’t, he wouldn’t because he wasn’t capable of performing magic. Not yet at least.
And then he saw it, purple curtains, frame, funny smoke, moon; Lao’s store was right there!
He ran, at his full speed that wasn’t really that fast at all, he ran and ran until he reached it, knocked on the door and received a warm “Welcome!”

“Your brother told me you’d be coming; I really need another pair of hands so you couldn’t have come at a better time.”
“I’m glad I can help” – Cael was awkwardly shifting his weight from one feet to another, he had never seen Lao, only heard what his brother told him, and for what it seems, he was one funny little person, that as a matter of fact wasn’t actually little at all, he was almost 2 meters high.
“Just wait there for a minute while I fetch you a robe” – Said Lao as he went inside the laboratory.“I’m glad I can help” – Cael was awkwardly shifting his weight from one feet to another, he had never seen Lao, only heard what his brother told him, and for what it seems, he was one funny little person, that as a matter of fact wasn’t actually little at all, he was almost 2 meters high.
Cael looked around, again and again, he was so nervous that each time he looked and though he had seen it all, he looked again and found a lot of other things. The inside of the shop was purple, same as the curtains and the door was blue on the inside as well. There were intricate designs on the only wall that wasn’t covered by shelves of potions and a door with a sun indicated where the laboratory was. All Cael could think of was that the shop was extremely colourful and mystique. There was a certain feeling to it that he couldn’t put a finger on, something....something different.
“Here we go, I hope it fits, it was my old robe when I first worked here, has quite a few years on it but should do fine” - Said Lao as he handed Cael the dark purple robe.
“T-Thank You” - He had something on his mind, he wondered if should really ask about it, he decided to do it.
“Why is it that you have so much purple stuff?” - He was hoping for the worse, Lao would scold him for asking, most probably fire him.
“Hum...I like purple, and it’s said that the ancients believed the colour held a powerful energy, one that would benefit body and soul.”
“Oh, OK”
Lao was wearing an awkward blush, it made Cael notice other things about him too. He had Silver hair, long and pretty, his eyes were yellow and framed by round spectacles, and the characteristically ears of an elf were there too, so Lao was an elf, his brother had forgotten to mention that. He wore a long black robe that seemed a bit too big for him and his clothes were the same as everyone else’s but of a better quality. He thanked whichever divine force he was supposed to be fond of for the fact that Lao was not a small elf, which could’ve been bothersome when cooking up potions, he might fall into them or get lost, and Cael wouldn’t know where to look.
“So first thing, and since this is your first day, all I need you to do is stay here and help customers with whatever they might need.”
“Whatever?” - asked Cael
“Yes, whatever might be related to the shop and potions, do not engage in any wicked adventure like that brother of yours, you might come out hurt, we get every kind around here.” – Lao looked sideways, as if in deep thought.
Cael sat himself on the stool behind the counter and waited, he puffed his cheeks more than once, played with his contact fluff and played with his robe, as he quickly reached the conclusion that he was not particularly fond of purple at all, but it would have to do.
Working at a potion’s store could be both quite boring and exciting, if you work behind the counter you are bound to be looking at spiders and spots on the ground forever, however if you work on the laboratory making potions, it can be quite fun. Or at least he thought so.
But even now and then a costumer comes in and you have to do what you have to do, help them in whatever they might need.
“Hum...is this Lao’s Potions Store?” – Said a hooded figure that looked suspiciously like Cael’s brother.
“Yes Kain, its Lao’s and you know it better than anyone already, what are you doing here?”
“Well, I’m just checking to see if everything’s alright with my little brother.” – Said the hooded figure that turned out to be Kain, Cael’s brother as he approached the other and removed the hood covering his head.
“I’m not a kid anymore you know?”
“Cael, you are 12, until you turn 18 yes, you are a kid”
Wow, I only made 2 typos! (I think, I didn't used my spectacles when I read it second time).
ReplyDeleteBugger, why am I so fond of making typos if they are my worst enemies, or at least right after anatomy that is.
